Entries Open for Inspirational Stories Through Sport - Recipient Receives $50K Grant

BOWLING GREEN, Ky., Sept. 23, 2015 - Russell Athletic announced today it is launching the fifth annual "Fight Like Dylan Award" honoring high school teams that have demonstrated inspiring determination and perseverance through sports. A panel of judges, led by former NFL Head Coach Tony Dungy, will select one recipient to receive a $50,000 grant in athletic apparel and sports equipment for their school. To submit an entry, head to FightLikeDylan.org to share how your team utilized teamwork to accomplish team goals or overcame challenging obstacles to achieve success in the community through sports.

"Throughout the past four years we have heard remarkable stories across the country," said Robby Davis, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Russell Athletic. "The 'Fight Like Dylan Award' has made an incredible impact on our previous recipients and we are proud to continue supporting this initiative honoring high school sports teams that have persevered and triumphed in the face of adversity."

Last year's "Fight Like Dylan Award" recipient was Shoreham-Wading River High School in Shoreham, NYC (Long Island) which honored fallen teammate Tom Cutinella who embodied the spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship. Tom rallied the team around the idea of being the Long Island Champions. Through his inspiration, the Wildcats finished 10-0 and won the Long Island title.

Additional recipients include:

  • 2013: Buena Vista HS, Buena Vista, CO
  • 2012: Williamsport HS, Williamsport, MD
  • 2011: Edmondson HS, Brownsville, KY

This year's judges panel that will be reviewing submissions and selecting a recipient are former NFL Football Coach,Tony Dungy, Dylan's mother, Heather Rebeor and representatives from the four previous recipients.

"This is truly a program that is near and dear to my heart," said program spokesperson Tony Dungy. "I am so proud to partner with Russell Athletic, Dylan's family, and the previous recipients to celebrate these great stories of teams coming together to overcome tragedy and hardship."

Dylan Rebeor's story of determination and tireless dedication to his teammates anchors the "Fight Like Dylan" program. In 2010, he was diagnosed with cancer, but after becoming ill, his commitment to his team never wavered. His final wish was for his team to receive new uniforms for the upcoming season through the "Make A Wish Foundation". The "Fight Like Dylan Award" was established by Russell Athletic in conjunction with Dylan's family and coaches to not only grant that wish, but to celebrate other teams facing adversity and turning it into a powerful story of success through teamwork.

"Dylan had an extraordinary life and always inspired others while dealing with difficult circumstances," said Heather Rebeor, Dylan's mother. "We're so proud that Dylan's memory and spirit will live on through the Russell Athletic 'Fight Like Dylan Award.'"

Following the wildly popular sublimation design debuted at last year's event, the 2015 jerseys will once again feature unique shoulder sublimation. Each team uniform will be represented by a distinct color tailored exclusively to their region. The U.S. regional teams' jerseys will feature unique sublimation with the states represented in each region, while International teams will have their region displayed in a similar pattern.

"At Russell Athletic, we know that the uniform is more than just a jersey. It's a symbol of accomplishment, hard work and pride," said Matt Murphy, Vice President of Marketing, Russell Athletic. "These players and coaches have a genuine love for the game and we're thrilled to be a part of their baseball journey. It is a privilege to be the Official Uniform of the Little League World Series, and we congratulate all 16 teams on this exciting accomplishment."

The uniforms parallel the innovations and trends of college and professional team uniforms with superior performance and durability features. Designs and decorations have been fully sublimated into the jerseys, eliminating the weight associated with twill numbers and lettering. The jersey material is breathable, lightweight stretch fabric used by many Division I universities and Minor League teams. The official Little League Keystone patch is sewn on the left sleeve of the jersey.

"The Little League World Series brings teams from across the globe together to celebrate their shared passion for baseball, and we value the opportunity to outfit every team at each of our nine events in quality uniforms," said Liz DiLullo Brown, Little League Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Partnerships. Shoreham-Wading River High School Honored as Recipient of Russell Athletic's Fourth Annual "Fight Like Dylan Award"
Shoreham-Wading River High School Honored as Recipient of Russell Athletic's Fourth Annual "Fight Like Dylan Award"

Long Island, NY School Awarded $50,000 Grant; Celebrated On-Field at 2014 Russell Athletic Bowl

BOWLING GREEN, Ky., Dec. 29, 2014 -- Russell Brands, LLC has announced Shoreham-Wading River High School as the recipient of the fourth annual "Fight Like Dylan Award," which honors the courageous life of Dylan Rebeor, a high school football player who lost his battle with cancer and whose last wish was for new uniforms for his teammates. In honor of Dylan's character, courage and consideration of others, Russell is awarding a $50,000 team uniform and equipment grant to Shoreham-Wading River High School for demonstrating determination through adversity.

The Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats suffered a tragic loss on October 2, 2014, when junior linebacker Tom Cutinella passed away after colliding with an opponent during a regular season game. Cutinella was an outspoken leader on a Shoreham-Wading River team that was in the hunt for its first-ever Long Island (N.Y.) Class IV Football Championship, and whom just days before had pulled his team together to rally their spirits around the thought of being Long Island Champions.

"Tom not only shined on the football field, but throughout the halls of our school and in his community," said Shoreham-Wading River assistant football coach Tom Fabian. "He always put the team first, and wanted nothing more than to win for those guys on the field next to him. We are so honored to be receiving this prestigious award."

Following the tragic incident, Tom's family, friends, teammates and coaches decided that the best way to honor his memory was to play the rest of the season for their beloved teammate, and that is just what they did. Behind the motto of "Tommy Tough," the Wildcats went on to finish the season with a 10-0 record and their first-ever championship.

"We had an extremely difficult decision this year with hundreds of quality submissions across the country for the 'Fight Like Dylan Award,'" said Robby Davis, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Russell Athletic. "All of the judges were deeply touched by Tom's story, and we are honored to present this award to the entire Shoreham-Wading River community."

The Shoreham-Wading River story, like the three previous recipients since the program was created in 2011, is next in line with Dylan's tremendous story. After he became ill, Dylan's commitment and dedication to his team never wavered. In fact, his final wish was for his teammates to receive brand new uniforms through the Make-A-Wish Foundation for the upcoming season. The "Fight Like Dylan Award" was established by Russell Athletic in conjunction with Dylan's family and coaches to celebrate his life and selflessness.

To celebrate the award, select members of the Shoreham-Wading River High School community traveled toOrlando to be recognized and will receive the award during the Russell Athletic Bowl on December 29, 2014.

Previous recipients of the "Fight Like Dylan Award" include:

    • 2011: Edmonson County High School (Edmonson, KY)
    • 2012: Williamsport High School (Williamsport, MD)
    • 2013: Buena Vista High School (Buena Vista, CO)

To be eligible for the "Fight Like Dylan Award," schools across the country submitted stories showing how their team overcame a challenge or triumphed in the face of adversity while embodying Dylan's spirit and courage. Former pro football head coach and current NBC Sports Football analyst Tony Dungy and pro football players Mark Ingram, Pierre Garcon and Colt McCoy served on the "Fight Like Dylan Award" selection committee, along with Dylan's mother, Heather Rebeor, and former Columbia Central High School head coach, Vance Belew.

$50,000 Grant to be Awarded to a High School Team at the 2014 Russell Athletic Bowl

BOWLING GREEN, Ky., Sept. 17, 2014 -- Russell Brands, LLC, announced today it will begin accepting entries for the fourth annual Russell Athletic "Fight Like Dylan Award," named in honor of Dylan Rebeor, a high school football player whose last wish was for his teammates to receive new uniforms. Through this initiative, Russell Athletic will donate apparel and equipment via a $50,000 grant to one high school team that has demonstrated determination through sports, paying tribute to Dylan's remarkable character, courage and consideration of others. This year, submissions can be made at www.fightlikedylan.org.

Rebeor was a wide receiver on Columbia (Tenn.) Central High School's football team, but tragically passed away at the age of 16 on Dec. 3, 2010 after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Despite Dylan's insurmountable challenges during treatment, his commitment and dedication to his team never wavered. Inspired by their fallen teammate, that season the Columbia Central Lions took home their first state championship in 58 years.

"Russell Athletic is proud to celebrate the tremendous courage of Dylan Rebeor under the most challenging of circumstances," said Robby Davis, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Russell Athletic. "Each year, we are inspired by the remarkable support of communities who overcome great obstacles to allow their youth sports teams to succeed both on and off the field. This is truly one of Russell Athletic's proudest and most revered programs."

Last year's "Fight Like Dylan Award" recipient was Buena Vista high school in the town of Buena Vista, CO. The Buena Vista community suffered an awful tragedy earlier in 2013, when a rock slide took the lives of five people on a family hike, including assistant football coach Dwayne Johnson and his wife, track and field coach Dawna Johnson. Three other family members also passed away, but with Dwayne's strength and courage, he was able to save the lone survivor, the couple's 13-year-old daughter, Gracie Johnson. The football team was overcome with emotion the rest of the season but made an incredible run, finishing with an 11-1 record before falling in the CHSAA 1A Football Championship state semifinals.

    Previous winners include:

    • 2013: Buena Vista HS, Buena Vista, CO
    • 2012: Williamsport HS, Williamsport, MD
    • 2011: Edmondson HS, Brownsville, KY

To be eligible for the "Fight Like Dylan Award," participants must submit an entry at www.fightlikedylan.org explaining how their team overcame a challenge or triumphed in the face of adversity. Entries will be accepted now through December 5. The contest's official rules are also available on the site.

"Dylan had an extraordinary life and always inspired others while dealing with difficult circumstances," said Heather Rebeor, Dylan's mother. "We're so proud that Dylan's memory and spirit will live on through the Russell Athletic 'Fight Like Dylan Award.' He truly cared about others more than himself and now his legacy will continue with youth sports teams across the country."

Russell Athletic ambassadors and pro football players Pierre Garcon, Mark Ingram, and Colt McCoy will serve on the "Fight Like Dylan Award" selection committee. Also on the committee is Dylan's mother, Heather, and Columbia Central High School head coach, Vance Belew. The fourth annual winner of the "Fight Like Dylan Award" will be announced at the 2014 Russell Athletic Bowl, taking place in late December at Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium, in Orlando, FL.

Russell Athletic and Boeing Give 787 Carbon Fiber New Life on Football Field
Russell Athletic and Boeing Give 787 Carbon Fiber New Life on Football Field

Russell Athletic CarbonTek shoulder pad system made with same high-performance carbon fiber as Boeing 787 Dreamliner

BOWLING GREEN, Ky., Aug. 27, 2014 -- Russell Brands LLC and Boeing (NYSE: BA) announced today that they are working together to incorporate excess carbon fiber from 787 Dreamliner production in Russell Athletic protective athletic gear.

The companies will expand an initial collaboration that puts 787 carbon fiber into Russell Athletic's CarbonTek football shoulder pad system. Russell Athletic and Boeing see significant benefits in using aerospace-grade carbon fiber, as the carbon filaments provide a high strength-to-weight ratio and greater durability.

The "CarbonTek with OS Technology™" (patent pending) shoulder pad system has the sports industry's first-ever exoskeleton made of 100 percent, aerospace-grade carbon fiber, which is thinner, stronger and approximately 10 percent lighter compared to competitors. The high-performance fiber also offers an increased range of motion and secure fit for the athlete's body.

"We are thrilled to partner with Boeing and discover new ways to utilize carbon fiber used on the 787 to make innovative, game-changing products for the sports industry," said Robby Davis, senior vice president and general manager, Russell Athletic. "It's an exciting opportunity for both companies to leverage the value of carbon fiber used in high-performance gear while helping to meet environmental goals."

Boeing, which markets surplus factory materials to meet the company's environmental and business goals, sees more opportunities to repurpose carbon fiber as it increases the use of carbon fiber-reinforced composites in its airplanes. The 787, which is 20 percent more fuel efficient than the airplane it replaces, has a composite fuselage and wing. Boeing's new 777X will be the largest and most-efficient twin-engine jet in the world due in part to the industry's largest composite wing.

"Boeing decided to build the 787 Dreamliner with carbon composites to increase fuel efficiency for our customers and improve the passenger experience," said Julie Felgar, managing director of Boeing Commercial Airplanes environmental strategy. "Our collaboration with Russell Athletic ‎is a fabulous opportunity to utilize the strength and lightweight characteristics of 787 carbon fiber to support elite athletes on the field."

Several elite collegiate players from Division I universities will be wearing the CarbonTek throughout the upcoming football season, as well as Russell Athletic's three pro football ambassadors: Pierre Garcon, Mark Ingram and Colt McCoy.

The announcement of the new uniforms continues a long-standing relationship between Russell Athletic and Little League Baseball and Softball that dates back more than 30 years.

The uniforms are representative of the hard work, dedication and sacrifice required to getting to the Little League Baseball World Series, and were designed exclusively for the players featuring the Little League motto "Character, Courage and Loyalty". The words that mean so much to the Little League organization have been designed into the fabric of the uniform, including the jersey sleeve and the ¾ length sleeve performance undershirt. There will be 16 total new uniforms, eight for the U.S. regions and eight International regions.

"Russell Athletic is extremely proud of these jerseys and what they represent," said Robby Davis, Russell Athletic Sr. Vice President, General Manager.
